According to a study published by McKinsey, the long-distance rail sector in 2018 across the EU was generally dominated by rail operators ranked as market leaders in their respective countries. While this sector was completely dominated by leading rail operators in both France and Spain alike, the long-distance rail landscape looked more diverse in Germany, Austria, and Italy after seeing newcomers such as Flixtrain (Germany) and Italo (Italy) enter the market.
