According to the source, an accurate assessment of the number of death sentences in Afghanistan, China, North Korea, and Vietnam was not possible due to the countries' secrecy. The source states that China conducted the highest number of executions globally in 2022.

** Values are according to the data given on 23. September 2023. with 891 people being still under death sentence at that point. Authorities published the official figure of 1,320 people under death sentence for 2022 in February 2023, so there could have been possible commutations of death sentences and the figure could be lower.
