In 2021, around 344 percent of hospital beds for infectious diseases in Japan were occupied, indicating that beds for this purpose had to be supplemented by beds with other designations. The global occupancy rate of beds in Japanese hospitals amounted to roughly 76.1 percent in said year.

Yearly hospital bed occupancy rate = total number of hospitalized patients* from January to December / total from January to December of (number of days in a month x number of hospital beds at the end of the month) x 100
*The number of hospitalized patients refers to inpatients who occupy a bed at midnight each day, regardless of the number of beds initially designated for certain diseases. The number of patients occupying beds designated for patients with infectious diseases includes the number of patients occupying beds designated for patients with common diseases as an emergency measure. The bed occupancy rate for patients with infectious diseases can, therefore, exceed 100 percent.
