Gross national product (GNP) composition of East Germany by sector 1950-1967
Following the Second World War, approximately 37 percent of the German Democratic Republic's gross national product was generated through the industrial sector. This share grew to make up over half of the country's GNP by the late 1960s. While this trend of industrialization was similar across Eastern Europe at the time, this increase usually came at the expense of the agricultural sector; in East Germany, however, the decline in agriculture was not as drastic, and was mostly offset by declines in "other sectors".
