The net new cash flow of both actively-managed mutual funds and passively-managed index mutual funds in the United States fluctuated significantly between 2000 and 2021. In 2021, the net cash flow of active funds had decreased to a value of approximately -100.3 billion U.S. dollars. The net cash flow of index funds reached a value of approximately 41.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2021.
