In recent years, sports betting was legalized in the United States and with it came the rise of the online betting market. Therefore, it may come as no surprise that the most popular type of online gambling in the U.S., as of September 2021, was sports betting. The second most popular type of online gambling was the lottery draw with 31 percent of respondents stating that this was the case.

Currently, it is possible to play poker, casino games, and sports betting online in the United States. However, legalization varies on a state-by-state basis. As it stands, sports betting is the most widely legalized type of online gambling in the U.S. The most used U.S. sports betting service as of July 2020 was DraftKings, with competitor FanDuel coming in close second. Meanwhile, the most common age range of adults in the U.S. using DraftKing apps was between 26 and 35. When looking at other types of gambling, such as casino games, a study showed that just over 10 percent of adults said that they played online and in person casino games in U.S. at least once a month as of September 2021.

Sports betting legalization in the U.S.

In 2018, sports betting was legalized in the United States at the federal level, however, each state remained in control of its own regulations. As a result, the sports betting landscape is complicated as each state can legalize and regulate as they see fit. According to a 2021 study, it is less common for those living in a state where sports betting is illegal to bet on sports, with 82 percent of those living in such states saying that they never bet on sports.
