South Africa: countries with visa free access 2010-2022

As of January 11, 2022, holders of the South African passport did not require a visa, were able to obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor's permit, or an electronic travel authority to 104 countries. In 2015 and 2019, the score slightly dropped compared to the respective preceding years. Overall, the visa-free score for the South African passport increased during the period under review.

The Henley Passport Index ranks the passports of 199 countries worldwide.
The total score is calculated by cross-checking each passport against 227 possible travel destinations. "Each passport receives a score with value = 1, if passport holders do not require a visa (for each travel destination) or if they can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) when entering the destination."
"Where a visa is required, or where a passport holder has to obtain a government-approved electronic visa (e-Visa) before departure, a score with value = 0 is assigned to the passport. The same score is also assigned if passport holders need pre-departure government approval for a visa on arrival."
