As of May 2022, voters in the United States do not feel strongly one way or the other about the country’s responsibility to protect and defend Taiwan from China, with 32 percent of respondents indicating that the U.S. does not have a responsibility to Taiwan, and nearly a third of respondents said they didn’t know or had no opinion. However, respondents who also indicated that they were familiar with China-Taiwanese relations were less likely to have no opinion, with 51 percent saying they believe the United States does have a responsibility to defend Taiwan, and only 17 percent saying they had no opinion.
