Total land area leased for residential housings in Shanghai 2011-2021
In 2020, the annual land area leased for residential purposes in Shanghai amounted to almost 19 million square meters, representing an increase of around 365 percent since 2016. All urban land plots in China are solely owned by the state, and the lease of land rights is an important source of income for local governments in the country.
