Total annual methane emissions in France 1990-2021, by sector
Total annual emissions of methane (CH4) decreased steadily in France between 1990 and 2021, falling from around 2.8 million metric tons in the 90s to less than 2.2 millions in 2020 and 2021. The modernization of the energy transformation industry was the main reason for this decrease. The agriculture sector was the largest emitter of this greenhouse gas, with over 65 percent of the total emissions' volume.
