Sources of emissions in France
In 2021, the main source of GHG emissions in France was by far the transportation sector, at 30 percent. The agricultural sector and the manufacturing industry followed at almost 20 percent each. It is noteworthy that GHG emissions by private vehicles in France amounted to almost 55 percent of the total emissions from the transportation sector, while almost 50 percent of the GHG emissions from agriculture were produced by enteric fermentation in the stomachs of cattle.Transportation also accounted for over 50 percent of the total nitrous oxide and dioxide emissions in France in 2021. Residential activities, such as biomass burning for cooking and heating, and agriculture were the leading sources of particulate matter, which is the most harmful air pollutant.
