The European Union's Effort Sharing Regulation was amended in 2023, with new national targets of Member States collectively contributing to EU-level emission reductions of 40 percent in 2030, relative to 2005 levels. These reductions will be in the following sectors: domestic transportation (excluding aviation), buildings, agriculture, small industry, and waste. These new targets vary greatly by Member State, ranging from 10 to 50 percent compared to 2005 levels.
Germany's previous target of 38 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 has now been increased to 50 percent. Meanwhile, Poland, which is the fourth-largest emitter in the EU, has increased its emissions reduction target from seven percent below 2005 levels to 17 percent.
