In Arab States, migrant workers made up over 40 percent of the total workforce. This is because of the relatively small population in these countries, and the fact that labor force participation rates tend to be lower among the locals compared to migrants in this region. Around one in five of the total workforce were migrant workers in North America and Northern, Southern, and Western Europe. In 2019, there were around 170 million migrant workers worldwide.
