MENA: agricultural water use efficiency 2004-2020

The efficiency of water use for agriculture in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been fluctuating over the observed period, reaching about 15.54 value added U.S. dollars per cubic meter of water in 2020. The largest share of total water withdrawals in most MENA region countries was for agricultural purposes.

SDG Indicator 6.4.1 Water Use Efficiency tracks the value added in US dollars per volume of water used in cubic meters, by a given economic activity over time. Agriculture water-use efficiency measures the ratio of dollar value added to the volume of water used for irrigated agriculture.
MENA region countries included: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
