On May the 4th, residents in the Netherlands commemorate those who lost their lives in the second world war, known as Remembrance of the Dead or Dodenherdenking in Dutch. On the 5th of May, residents celebrate the liberation from the German occupation, known as Liberation Day, or Bevrijdingsdag in Dutch. On Remembrance of the Dead day, from the 18:00 until sunset, residents traditionally hang their Dutch flag half-mast, while on Liberation Day residents will hang their flag full-mast throughout the day. For a while, however, residents upset with the government, particularly in their handling of the national nitrogen crisis, have hung their flag upside down as a form of protest. A vast majority of 73 percent of respondents had no compassion for those who do, however, as they seemingly found it more appropriate to remember the the victims of the war.
