U.S. approval of how Kevin McCarthy handled the risk of a shutdown 2023, by party
In September 2023, McCarthy's initial bill to fund the federal government was rejected by the House of Representatives. In an attempt to stave off a government shutdown, McCarthy proposed a new bipartisan bill, which gained House approval. Nevertheless, several far-right Republican representatives expressed discontent with McCarthy's bipartisan approach, leading to the successful motion to remove him from his position as Speaker of the House on October 3. This was the fist time in U.S. history that the House of Representatives has voted to remove its Speaker.
