As of April 1, 2024, Sweden had by far the highest carbon tax rate of the Nordics countries, at over 127 U.S. dollars per metric ton of CO₂ equivalent (USD/tCO₂e). In comparison to 1991, when it was first established, Sweden's carbon tax rate has more than tripled. In fact, Sweden has one of the highest carbon taxes in the world.
Meanwhile, Finland, the first Nordic country to establish a carbon tax, had the third-highest rate in the region, at 83.7 USD/tCO₂e.

Supplementary notes
*Carbon tax prices for Sweden before 2024 were taken from the 2023 report. Prices prior to 2024 are on 31 March, or latest available prior to 31 March each year.
Certain countries and jurisdictions use different carbon tax rates for different sectors or fuels. For this statistic, the higher carbon price has been used.
Prices are not necessarily comparable between carbon pricing initiatives because of differences in the sectors covered and allocation methods applied, specific exemptions, and different compensation methods.
