In 2020, the United States provided and mobilized only 19 percent of its fair share contribution, calculated according to the country's historical emissions, to the climate finance target of 100 billion U.S. dollars established at the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) in 2009, during which developed countries across the globe agreed on providing financial aid to help developing countries address climate change. As the largest historical emitter, the U.S. is the country that stands the furthest from its fair share contribution. On the other side of the spectrum, Switzerland's contribution represented 436 percent of the its fair share. Nevertheless, the overall financial resources mobilized by developed countries worldwide in 2020 still fell short from the 100 billion U.S. dollars target, amounting to a total of 83.3 billion U.S. dollars.
