Namibia: wildlife trafficking drivers 2020

In 2020, a survey carried out among prisoners incarcerated for wildlife crimes revealed that the majority share of 42 percent carried out poaching activities for financial reasons. Following this were social reasons at 22 percent, whereby the offender carried out an order from their employer or agreed to do a favor for a friend or relative.

Illegal wildlife trade has become a major issue in countries where endemic corruption coincides with various political, economic, and social challenges.
