With a crime rate of 102.9 per 1000 people the North East, which contains the urban centers of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, has the highest crime rate of all the regions here. Similarly high crime rates are evident in other areas of northern England, with Yorkshire and the North West having crime rates of 98.3 and 98.1 respectively. In the English capital, London, the crime rate is 93.6 per 1000 people. The lowest crime rate is in the relatively rural South West with a crime rate of 66.6.
