Largest methane emitters in Canada 2022, by physical asset
The biggest methane (CH4) emitter in Canada in 2022 was the Montney oil and gas field in British Columbia, with an estimated 243,011 metric tons of methane emitted. Of the 10 highest methane emitting assets in Canada that year, only one wasn't an oil and gas field. This was the Donkin Coal Mine in Nova Scotia, which emitted roughly 60,000 metric tons of methane. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas with a global warming potential roughly 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. In total, Canada's 10 biggest methane emitters produced the equivalent of 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂e).
