U.S. private construction spending: residential buildings 1999-2019

There was a noticeable drop in the value of new private residential buildings put in place in the United States around and immediately after the 2008 recession . However, since then, the number of private residential buildings put in place has increased steadily reaching 539.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. This trend is also reflected in the number of housing units authorized by building permits, where the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan in Texas experienced some of the highest residential construction output in the country.

Housing in America

The majority of Americans lives in single-family houses. The size of single-family homes has also seemed to reflect the recession, but over the past decades, the average U.S. home has increased in size. Despite growing in size, the average occupancy in each house has seemed to decrease, resulting in an increased average area per person in U.S. homes. Overall, per capita material use and energy consumption in the residential sector have increased despite resource efficient building strategies that have been implemented.
