Leading U.S. electric utilities based on the number of customers in 2018
(in 1,000s)
Leading electric utilities based on number of consumers 2018
Florida Power and Light Company had the highest number of customers of any leading electric utility in the United States, serving approximately 4.96 million customers in 2018. Southern California Edison Company was a close second, followed by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), both California-based companies.

Utility ownership

Over half of electricity providers in the United States are publicly-owned, and roughly a quarter are considered cooperatives. Although municipal and cooperative utilities greatly outnumber investor-owned utilities (IOUs) in the United States, IOUs serve, by far, the highest number of customers. This is because municipal and cooperative utilities are much smaller and locally-based, generally operating not for profit and without commercial incentive to expand.

Largest companies and revenue

Southern California Edison and PG&E are the two largest investor-owned utilities IOUs in the United States, and generated some of the highest commercial revenue among leading electric utilities in 2018. While Virginia Electric and Power had a lower number of customers, it ranked highly for commercial revenue, above many larger companies.
