Start-up births/deaths and employment gains/losses, by quarter 2002-2009 U.S. This statistic shows the number of jobs gained and lost as a direct result of births and deaths of business start-ups in the private sector in the United States each quarter from 2002 to 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2008 approximately 697,000 jobs were gained as a result of start-ups being grounded, while 891,000 jobs were lost when start-ups were forced to close down.
