Ranking of machine tool manufacturers
The world’s largest machine tool manufacturing companies include Germany’s Trumpf, China’s Shenyang and DMTG (Dalian Machine-Tool Group), as well as Amada, Komatsu and Mori Seiki of Japan. DMG Mori Seiki Co. acquired a majority stake in its German sister company in 2015 and will likely nudge past its competitors in next year’s ranking.
Machine tools are used to shape rigid metals such as metals, by cutting, shearing, grinding or lathing. They are typically operated by a machinist. However, the actual working process is beyond the machinist’s control. Today, machine tools are often computerized machines, where blueprints, or so-called computer-aided designs (CAD), are converted into computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs during the parts manufacturing process.
Machine tools are used in a wide array of industries, enabling the precise manufacture of parts and components. Germany’s Schuler AG is a major player in the area of minting technology. The manufacturer of mechanical and hydraulic press systems, tool and die systems, hydroforming machinery and process automation equipment has customers around the world, including the Royal Canadian Mint or the Mexican Mint. China, Japan, Germany and South Korea are among the leading producing countries of machine tools.
