Largest energy utility companies - employees 2018

Veolia Environnement in is one of the largest energy utility companies in the world based on the number of employees. With its headquarters in Paris, France, Veolia employed 171,500 people in 2018, while two other French companies in the Paris metropolitan area, ENGIE and Suez, were also among the largest employers.

Evolution of French utility companies

In its current form, Suez is a publicly traded waste and water company with the one of the highest revenues in the world among waste management companies, following Veolia. Suez Environnement (now Suez SA) was an operating division of Suez, however, it became a stand-alone entity after the merger of Suez and another utility company, Gaz de France (ENGIE), which became the electric utility collectively known as ENGIE.

Away from coal, towards renewables

While roughly seven percent of ENGIE’s electricity generation came from coal in 2018, ENGIE announced in 2019 that they would be permanently ending their activities in coal-fired energy generation. Over half of ENGIE’s electricity generation is fueled by natural gas, though the company is investing more heavily in renewables such as wind power in recent years, and is one of the largest operators of wind farms in France.
