Newly diagnosed thyroid cancer in England 1995-2017, by gender This statistic shows the registrations of newly diagnosed cases of thyroid cancer in England from 1995 to 2017, by gender. The thyroid is a gland located in the neck. Cancer of the thyroid occurs when cells within the thyroid begin to grow abnormally. In 2017, 912 males and 2,342 females were newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer. This is an increase on the number of cases from the preceding year among both genders.
