Average cost of road accidents and casualties in Great Britain 2017 Fatal accidents and casualties were significantly more expensive than either serious or slight accidents in the United Kingdom (UK) during 2017. On average a fatal accident resulted in more than 2.1 million British pounds in prevention costs in 2017. The cost of slight accidents was nowhere near as much, but not insignificant, reaching 25.5 thousand British pounds. Overall, there were nearly 130,000 reported road accidents in Great Britain that year, of which 1,676 were fatal.
Driver’s error most common factor

The most common cause for any type of accident was a driver’s reaction error, with there being 64,189 reported instances where a police officer had to attend a scene. Of these, a driver or rider failing to look properly was most frequent cause of an accident.

Road accident total costs increase in 2017

Total prevention costs from reported road accidents amounted to 16.3 billion British pounds in 2017. Between 2010 and 2017, figures had grown by approximately 8 percent, while the lowest figure had been recorded in 2013.
