Expenditure on overseas travel by Australian residents 2019-2020

Australian residents traveling abroad spent approximately 65 billion Australian dollars on overseas trips in the year ending March 2020, an increase of over two billion Australian dollars from the previous year.

 Destinations and departures

Most of this expenditure was spent on trips to the United States, where Australians spent in excess of ten million Australian dollars. The United Kingdom and the rest of Europe were also popular destinations in terms of expenditure, attracting six and 4.5 million AUD from Australians respectively.

International departures from Australia have seen year-on-year growth since 2006, reaching just under ten million overseas departures in 2019. New Zealand, Indonesia and the United States were the most popular destinations for Aussies, attracting around a million departures apiece in the same year.

 Global and regional context 

Australia is in the global top ten when it comes to the largest international tourism expenditure, ranking seventh. It also has the highest international tourism expenditure in the Asia Pacific region, at over 40 million U.S. dollars, followed closely by Japan and South Korea.
