The data refers to business R&D performed in the UK irrespective of the residence of the ultimate owner. Overseas activities of affiliates of UK businesses are not included by the source.
* 4,000 in Great Britain, and 1,400 in Northern Ireland.
'Other' includes funds from UK Private Non-Profit organizations and Higher Education establishments, and from 2011, international organizations.

The source adds the following note regarding the response rate of the survey: "The response rate for the 2020 BERD survey in Great Britain was 54%, which was lower than usual because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The pre-pandemic rate for 2018 was 85%. This means that the estimates in this statistical bulletin are subject to more uncertainty than usual because of fewer responses on which to base the survey results."
