This statistic shows the total number of individuals applying for asylum in the European Union (EU) from 2009 to 2018. The largest number of asylum applications in this time period was recorded in 2015 at 1.23 million applications. 2016 saw a slight decline in numbers, with roughly 1.1 million people applying for asylum, while 2017 and 2018 saw a further decrease to 702 thousand and 590 thousand, respectively.
