European Union migration flow by main routes 2014-2019

In 2019 the Eastern Mediterranean route accounted for almost 59 percent of all illegal border-crossings in the European Union, with the next most common route being the Western Balkans. While the Eastern Mediterranean route consistently has a high share of illegal border crossings, the Central Mediterranean route into Italy experienced the majority of illegal border-crossings in 2017, before the Western Mediterranean saw increased focus in 2018.
