Sales of Subway restaurants in the U.S. 2015-2021
How does Subway compare to other QSRs in the U.S.?
Subway is still the leading sandwich chain in the U.S., with its systemwide sales being roughly double that of its closest competitor Arby’s. In 2021, Subway accounted for some of the highest sales in the whole QSR industry, ranking amongst big players such as Starbucks and Burger King. Unsurprisingly, the king of quick service, McDonald’s, placed first on the list with U.S. systemwide sales of over 40 billion U.S. dollars.
How many Subway stores are in the U.S.?
Along with a decline in U.S. sales, Subway has seen a decrease in the number of Subway stores in the United States over the past five years. While Subway had approximately 27 thousand stores in the U.S. in 2015, the figure scraped to just about 22 thousand in 2020. A portion of Subway's restaurant closures in 2020, however, was likely a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2021, Subway had over 21 thousand stores.
