Liver transplant rate per million population in Europe 2016-2017, by country Croatia had the highest rate of liver transplants in 2017, at 28.3 per million population. This was a slight decrease from 2016, when the rate was 28.8 per million. Spain followed in 2017 with the second highest rate at 26.9 liver transplants per million. Switzerland had the largest rate increase between the years increasing from 12.9 to 16.8 per million population.
Transplant activity in Croatia

In comparison to the rest of Europe, Croatia also had the second highest rate of heart transplants in 2016 and 2017. 7.9 heart transplants per million population were carried out in the country in 2017. Additionally, in 2017, Croatia had a kidney transplant rate of 39.3 per million population, although this was only the fifteenth highest rate in Europe in this year.

Waiting on the transplant list

Over a three-year period from 2015 to 2017, the number of people in Croatia waiting for organs has increased, cumulating in 429 active patients on the kidney transplant waiting list in 2017 and 257 active patients waiting for a liver. Although in 2017, there were 12 and 19 patients who died on the transplant list waiting for a kidney and liver respectively.
