Kidney transplant rate per million population in Europe 2016-2017, by country In 2017, Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplant procedures at 70.5 per million population. This was an increase from 2016, when the rate was 65.5 per million. France followed in 2017 with the second highest rate at 58.2 kidney transplants per million. Norway had the largest rate increase between the years increasing from 45.3 to 51.7 per million population.
Transplant activity in Spain

In comparison to the rest of Europe, Spain also had the second highest rate of liver transplants 2017 with 26.9 liver transplants per million population carried out in the country. Additionally, in 2017, Spain had a heart transplant rate of 6.6 per million population, although this was only the seventh highest rate in Europe in this year.

Waiting on the transplant list

In 2017, there were 7.2 thousand patients in Spain waiting for a kidney with a further two thousand patients on the liver transplant list. Although in 2017, there were 60 and 26 patients who died on the transplant list waiting for liver and lung transplants respectively.
