The number of drug poisoning deaths in Denmark generally decreased during the period from 2009 to 2015 and was down at the lowest point 2015, when it amounted to 70 deaths. However, in 2016 this number had increased again and was up at a peak of 115 deaths in 2018 and 2019. In 2021, the number of deaths amounted to 95.
Most deaths from opioids
Overdosing or poisoning caused 75 percent of all drug-related deaths in Denmark. In almost all cases where drug use led to death, the deceased had been using opioids.
Cannabis use is the most commonly used drug
The most commonly used drug in Denmark in 2017 was cannabis, where the highest user group was between 15 and 24 years. 19.8 percent in this age group were cannabis users. The share of users declined with the older age groups, and in the age group from 55 to 64 years, 1.8 percent was using cannabis.
