Drug-related poisoning deaths in Denmark 2008-2018

The number of drug poisoning deaths in Denmark generally decreased during the period from 2009 to 2015 and was down at the lowest point 2015, when it amounted to 65 deaths. However, in 2016 this number had increased again and was up at a peak of 111 deaths in 2018. Most of the drug-related deaths in Denmark in 2016 occurred in Copenhagen capital municipality.

Most deaths from opioids

     75 percent of all drug-related deaths in Denmark were due to overdosing or poisoning. In almost all cases where drug use led to death, the deceased had been using opioids.

Cannabis use is the most commonly used drug

     The most commonly used drug in Denmark in 2016 was cannabis, where the highest user group was between 15 and 24 years. 19.8 percent in this age group were cannabis users. The share of users declined with the older age groups, and in the age group from 55 to 64 years, 1.8 percent was using cannabis.
