Urban population in Vietnam 2012-2021
Urbanization in Vietnam
Vietnam’s urbanization rate was at 37 percent in 2020. It was forecasted that the share of urban population will surpass the rural population by 2050. The urban population is rapidly increasing due to the number of immigrants and economic reforms as well as higher living standards. For example, the under-five child mortality rate is twice as high as in rural areas. Nevertheless, about 27 percent of urban population lived in slums in 2014.
Urban infrastructure in Vietnam
In June 2019, the World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved a 194.36 million U.S. dollar credit to support four secondary cities in Vietnam in the development of municipal infrastructure and urban planning. This project should help in reducing flood risks, improving sanitation and reducing travel times. Moreover, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are developing a metro system which is scheduled for completion in 2021.
