ASML's number of employees increased year-by-year and as of 2021, ASML reached 30,842 employees worldwide. Examining the numbers of employees distributed by region, most of ASML employees worked in Europe with 17,230 employed individuals. The company had 7,430 and 6,182 employees in Asia and the United States, respectively.

Dutch semiconductor industry

On a country level, the Netherlands is an important market, home to many advanced players in the semiconductor industry. The Netherlands is regarded as being one of only a few countries in the world, together with the likes of the U.S. and Japan, to have a complete semiconductor industry value chain within its borders. This includes applied research, chip design, chip architecture, the production of chips, the equipment required to make them, and system integration and applications.

Chip production and equipment

The Netherlands is also home to several companies that provide equipment to the semiconductor manufacturing industry, including ASML. Headquartered in Veldhoven, the company generated revenues of 21.17 billion euros in 2022 and is the largest supplier of photolithography systems for the semiconductor industry worldwide. The company is a leading provider of machines involved in the production of 5nm chip technology.
