The South Korean company Samsung ranked in 2018, with a sales volume of about 78.5 billion U.S. dollars, overtaking Intel to become the market leader.
Semiconductors are a crucial element of modern electronic devices. In 2010, the global semiconductor industry registered an unprecedented year-on-year revenue growth rate of 31.8 percent. While post-2010 growth has been less impressive, it has generally hovered between 0 and 10 percent year-on-year. 2015 saw a slight decline, while 2016 growth was slight. Intel, one of the world’s largest semiconductor chip makers, had 13.8 percent of the total semiconductor market share. Intel’s main business lies in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips, accounting for a significant portion of Intel's net revenue.
