Latin America & Caribbean: gender wage equality perception index 2022
A survey carried out in 2020 and 2021 revealed that Bolivia and El Salvador had the lowest score of perceived gender wage equality among 22 Latin American and Caribbean countries surveyed. Bolivia scored 0.484 points of a maximum of one, grade that would represent perfect equality, while El Salvador was awarded 0.477 index points. This means that a gap of approximately 52 percent of the index 'wage equality for similar work' has yet to be bridged in both countries.
The indicator is based on the perceptions of wage equality in each country. Respondents were asked to which extent, in a scale from one to seven, wages for women are equal to those of men. The answers were then converted into a females to males ratio, where zero represents the worst possible level of inequality and one, perfect equality. Based on the estimated earned income per capita, Guatemala had the worst gender pay gap in Latin America and the Caribbean.
