Cybersecurity and cybercrime in the Asia-Pacific region - statistics & facts

The swift adoption of new internet-based technologies such as cloud computing, blockchain, or the internet of things (IoT) created various additional weak spots for cyber criminals to exploit in personal and professional networks alike. Currently estimated at over seven trillion U.S. dollars, the cost of cybercrime worldwide is set to increase steadily over the next years. Globally, the number of IoT malware attacks alone has recently surpassed 100 million. Due to its rapid digitalization and high adoption rate of recent technologies, the Asia-Pacific region is currently one of the major cauldrons for cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity in APAC

Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea lead the national cybersecurity index in APAC. The index measures each country's preparedness to prevent and manage cyber threats – all three countries have central government bodies dedicated to cybersecurity in place. In terms of cybersecurity revenue, five APAC countries rank within the global top 15, with China taking second place behind the United States. Across these five largest markets in the region, network security is the leading cyber solutions segment. While the constant adoption of new tech innovations brings along unprecedented risks to digital security of both consumers and companies, technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are also being successfully implemented to counteract cyber threats. Surveys conducted at companies across the APAC region have revealed various uses of AI and ML for cybersecurity measures, including system vulnerabilities testing and provision of strategy recommendations.

Cybercrime in APAC

The region's rapid digital development poses a constant challenge for cybersecurity providers. Some of the most cyberattack-prone industries worldwide are highly important across APAC. In recent years, cybercrime in the manufacturing industry has become more prevalent, as production sites and all steps along the supply chain can be potentially targeted. This affects sectors such as semiconductor or automotive manufacturing, two industries in which several APAC markets are among the leading global production hubs. In 2022, Toyota supplier Kojima Industries in Japan was involved in one of the largest supply chain attacks worldwide, with its manufacturing process being brought to a temporary halt due to a ransomware attack. Other cybercrime types frequently reported in APAC include multipurpose malware, infostealers, and cryptominers.
