Higher education holds significant importance in Israel. Similar to other countries, completing a first degree is a threshold condition for applying for entry-level jobs in the labor market. There are 10 universities in Israel, of which nine are funded by the state and one is private - Reichman University. In addition, many academic colleges operate in the country. In the academic year 2020/21, the number of first-degree students in higher education institutions in the country reached 211.6 thousand. The average age of new first-time entrants to higher education in Israel is one of the highest among OECD countries - 24 years. The main reason for that is the mandatory military service or civil service for Israelis between the ages of 18 and 21 for men and 18 to 20 for women.

Significant demand for technological studies

Technological fields have been at the forefront of the Israeli economy in recent years. Israel is known for its thriving tech sector and innovative business approach. In fact, graduates with degrees such as computer science or engineering have diverse employment opportunities in the country. For this reason, the demand for academic studies in these fields is strong. In the academic year 2020/21, engineering and architecture constituted the most popular field of study among first-degree students in Israeli universities. Moreover, the salaries in these fields are relatively high. For instance, in February 2023, the average monthly wage in the information and communication sector in Israel amounted to 29,872 Israeli shekels (roughly eight thousand U.S. dollars).

Importance is attached to advanced academic research

Israeli academic institutions see great importance in promoting research activities, including collaborations with international universities. Since 2017, the number of Israeli postdoctoral researchers in universities in Israel has generally grown gradually, reaching 1,591 in 2021. In the same year, a significant proportion of postdoctoral researchers, that is, over 70 percent, pursued science programs, including biology and engineering. This corresponded to the well-known scientific and technological expertise of the country. Furthermore, some postdoctoral researchers from abroad choose to study in Israel. As of 2021, the majority of foreign postdoctoral researchers in Israel were from India. The others were mainly from China, Germany, and the United States.
