The telecommunications industry can be divided in several categories such as fixed-line and fixed-broadband communication, mobile communication, and internet-based communication. In Thailand, wireless communication dominated the communications market in 2018. Hence, fixed-line subscriptions in Thailand seem to have decreased over the past decade, with only approximately three million fixed-line subscribers in that same year. In addition, the revenue of fixed-line telephone numbers in the third quarter 2019 also declined, when compared to the third quarter 2018.
Mobile communication, however, is a massive market in the telecommunications industry. In Asia Pacific, the number of 4G mobile subscribers was forecasted to rapidly reach almost one billion subscribers by 2020. For Thailand, the number of mobile subscribers has been steadily developing, and is estimated to go from around 72 million subscribers in 2010 to almost double that number in 2019. Furthermore, the 4G network is now available in every region of Thailand, provided by major mobile service operators, namely, AIS, DTac, and True Move H.
Recently, Advanced Info Services Public Co., Ltd. (AIS) ranked thirteenth in Asia Pacific in terms of brand value, with China Mobile ranking first. AIS also had the highest number of mobile subscribers in the second quarter 2019 in Thailand, with approximately 42 million subscribers when compared to True Move H and Dtac. Nevertheless, all three leading mobile operators offer a high-quality mobile user experience through their networks. For example, True Move H provided the best streaming performance of its network in the first half of 2019.
