However, the region continues to face significant and diverse political, economic, social, and health difficulties, including an increase in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, continuous conflicts in some countries, and refugee crises. Thriving healthcare sectors in MENA

While the healthcare systems of some countries in the region are struggling, others are well-funded and operate smoothly. Some hospitals in the area have developed into major medical hubs that receive patients from all over the world. The healthcare system of Saudi Arabia provides nationals and expats working in the public sector free public healthcare. The Ministry of Health is the main medical service provider responsible for most hospital facilities in the country. The UAE is recognized worldwide for providing quality medical services in the fields of ophthalmology, dental care, cancer treatment, and cosmetic surgery. It draws medical tourists from the region and beyond. UAE ranked 22nd in the 2020 World Index of Healthcare Innovation.

Healthcare in conflict countries

Conflict countries suffer from the high need for medical assistance and the low supply of medical professionals. Due to the ongoing wars, Yemen struggles to offer basic healthcare to its citizens. In Syria, more than half of the hospitals have suffered damage or destruction due to the continuing civil conflict. The Syrian healthcare system also lacks medications and medical supplies because of political sanctions. In general, patients needing medical attention tend to travel and spend more on medical services abroad that they cannot obtain in their home country. The factors that patients consider when choosing to travel abroad for medical services include the quality of the services provided, cost, and procedure success rates.
