Population of Latvia 1950-2020 This graph shows the total population of Latvia from 1950 to 2020. It can be seen that the population begins at 1.9 million in 1950 and then grows steadily until it reaches 2.7 million in 1990. In 1990 Latvia declared it's independence from the Soviet Union, from this point the population begins to decline rather fast and steadily, and Latvia is predicted to have under 1.9 million people in 2020, which is lower than the population was when the graph begins in 1950. This is a result of a low fertility rate and a negative net migration rate.
