NHS dentists joining and leaving in England 2008-2023

In 2022/23, there were 1,885 dentists joining the NHS. Until 2019/20, the yearly number of dentists joining the NHS has outnumbered the number who left. In 2019/20, 2.3 thousand dentists left the NHS, the highest number ever recorded. So far, since then there have been more leavers than joiners in NHS dentistry.

The source adds the following information: "To limit COVID-19 transmissions, dental practices were instructed to close and cease all routine dental care from the 25th March 2020, and began to reopen from 8th June 2020. The imposed restrictions impacted on dental earnings and expenses which may result in lower workforce numbers than expected from 2020/21. "
