Chile: perception on state of emergency and army role during protests 2019

In Chile's capital, Santiago, the majority of participants in a survey carried out on October 19, 2019 disagreed with president Sebastián Piñera's decision to declare a state of emergency, which allows the Chilean Army to take control of public security. Although 53 percent of respondents at the national level agreed with this decision, more than half of the people interviewed in the Santiago Metropolitan region, where protests broke out after the announcement of a price rise in public transport fares, were against the decision and the army's involvement in keeping public order.

Level of agreement with Piñera's declaration of state of emergency and the involvement of the army during protest rallies in Chile as of October 2019, by region
