In 2020, the eastern city of Kolkata in India had over 16 thousand private buses. This made up the largest number among the types of buses in the city that year. In 2016, the capital city of West Bengal was the second most polluted city in India, second only to Delhi. Despite having fewer registered vehicles as compared to the other Indian metropolitan cities, the 'city of joy' remained in the list of the most polluted cities across India for the past few years.
