As of April 2024, proposed new coal mines in China would have annual methane emissions amounting to nearly 830 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). Australia's proposed new coal mines would have the second-largest annual methane emissions, but by a wide margin, at some 78 MtCO₂e.
