Number of births and deaths in Shanghai, China 2011-2018

In 2019, approximately 169,000 births and 133,000 deaths of the total resident population were registered in Shanghai municipality in China. Despite the gradual relaxation of the one-child policy and its final abolition in 2016, the number of births in China did not increase sustainably. The birth rate in Shanghai remains low, while the death rate is increasing in recent years and will further grow in the future due to the aging of the society.
